The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali

Join us for this new five-week series exploring themes from the Yoga Sūtras of Patañjali. This series will be offered online through Zoom.

The Yoga Sūtras of Sage Patañjali (c. 200 BC) is considered the principle text on Yoga. The text was written and collated over 2000 years ago, presenting the art and science of Yoga in a systematic and highly-organized way. These Sūtras are profound, forming the philosophical and ethical foundation of our practice of Iyengar Yoga.

During these sessions, we will discuss the meaning and practical application of the Yoga Sūtras. In addition to guided open discussions, we will learn to chant the Sūtras explored in this series.

This five–week series will focus on Patañjali’s definition of yoga as citta staṃbha vṛtti or cittavṛtti nirodha, the establishment of the seer (puruṣa) as the ultimate goal of practice, and the eight petals of aṣṭāṅga yoga.

The course is open to all and is ideal for those who want an introduction to the Yoga Sūtras, as well as for those who have studied Yoga philosophy and wish to delve deeper.

Students are encouraged to obtain at least one text with a translation of the Sūtras. A list of suggested publications will be provided to students in advance. Supplementary study materials, recordings of the chanted Sūtras covered in this series, and weekly homework will be provided by the instructor.
