Kirtan (May 2024)

Kirtan (Hawaiian Style)

Join Laurie Freed as she plays the ukulele and chants simple kirtan mantras.

A kirtan is an ancient Indian call-and-response style song or chant, set to music.

It is a way of narrating, describing, or sharing traditional mantras. Mantras are sacred sound forms that have specific focus and energy. They are meant to guide and protect us.

Among the traditional instruments used for a kirtan are the harmonium, the tabla and flute. Being in Hawaii, the ukulele seems appropriate and works quite well!

Chanting as a group brings people together as a community in a way that other forms of yoga do not have. It creates a sense of connection and unity.

Please join Laurie Freed as she plays the ukulele and chants simple kirtan mantras.

A kirtan is an ancient Indian call-and-response style song or chant, set to music. It is a way of narrating, describing, or sharing traditional mantras. Mantras are sacred sound forms that have specific focus and energy. They are meant to guide and protect us.

Kirtan stems from a Sanskrit root that means “to cut through.” It is a practice for cutting through the idea of separation and can be used to connect our hearts and connect to the moment through sound.

Among the traditional instruments used for a kirtan are the harmonium, the tabla and flute. Being in Hawaii, the ukulele seems appropriate and works quite well!

The key to success in any form of mantra practice is repetition. Chanting as a group brings people together as a community in a way that other forms of yoga do not have. It creates a sense of connection and unity.

Handouts will be provided so that we can chant and play together. Feel free to bring instruments to play along, including your voice. All are welcome.

Micro/Macro: An Asana and Pranayama Journey Integrating the Inner with the Outer

At first, we practice Iyengar Yoga to notice what’s happening in our own bodies and minds. We become sensitized to imbalances that may be causing pain, physically, emotionally, or mentally. We may notice some patterns in our lives that contribute to imbalances, while also recognizing the imbalances in community and society.

Let’s spend some time connecting the dots to integrate the individual practice with the collective. How can one’s yoga practice also be a path toward social justice?

This series will cover all categories of poses, appropriate for all levels, while allowing time for discussion and reflection.

Video recordings will be sent to all registered students after each class

Pranayama Immersion with Gwi-Seok

Geeta Iyengar describes asana and pranayama as two wheels of a bicycle. Experience how a regular pranayama practice can complement and strengthen your asana practice, and impact the rest of your day.

As the prana (life force) of the earth rises with the sun at dawn, cultivate your own prana in a week of immersion. Each morning, for a week, we will rise together, in the comfort and ease of our own homes, to join online for a beautiful start to the day with guided pranayama. The goal is to establish a home rhythm of daily pranayama.

Recordings will be provided for two weeks in case you miss a session, or want to repeat sessions to reinforce the practice. If you prefer evening pranayama, use the recordings at dusk or before bedtime.

This series is appropriate for Iyengar Yoga practitioners with at least 1 year of asana study. You will need, at minimum, a mat, bolster, 2 blankets, a strap, and a chair.

Morning asana students: join us for pranayama, take a tea/coffee break, and then join your morning class to start your day with a wellspring of energy and positivity.

Exploring The Yoga Sūtras of Patañjali
Apr

to May 15

Exploring The Yoga Sūtras of Patañjali

Please join Purnima for the third installment of this ongoing five-week series, exploring themes from the Yoga Sūtras of Patañjali.

This third series will focus on the two wings of yogic discipline (abhyāsa and vairāgya), principles of prakṛti and puruṣa, and the concept of sequential order in our practice (krama).

The Yoga Sūtras of Sage Patañjali (c. 200 BC) is considered one of the foremost texts on Yoga. The text was written and collated in Sanskrit over 2000 years ago, systematically presenting the art and science of Yoga. These Sūtras are profound, forming the philosophical and ethical foundation of our practice of Iyengar Yoga.

During these sessions, we will discuss the meaning and practical application of the Yoga Sūtras. In addition to weekly presentations by the instructor and guided open discussions, we will learn to chant the Sūtras explored in this series.

The course is open to all interested and committed students. It is designed for those seeking an introduction to the Yoga Sūtras, as well as those who wish to delve deeper into Yoga philosophy.

Students are encouraged to obtain at least one text with a translation of the Sūtras. A list of suggested publications will be provided to students ahead of time. Supplementary study materials, recordings of the chanted Sūtras covered in this series, and weekly homework will also be offered by the instructor.

Saturdays from 4pm–5:30pm

Cost for entire series is $60. Commitment to the entire series is required as no drop-ins will be permitted. Links to the recordings of all sessions will be provided to registered students.
